FBI New Haven Warning College Students of Employment Scams — FBI - Federal Bureau of Investigation

FBI New Haven is providing this information to alert college students and professors of ongoing, fraudulent employment scams targeting college students across the United States. Scammers advertise phony job opportunities or directly solicit students for fictitious administrative positions. These fraudulent employment scams leave students who are seeking employment vulnerable to financial loss. Students should be wary of unsolicited job opportunities. If offered a job from a college employee, the student should contact that college employee through official college/university channels to confirm authenticity of the job offer.

A money mule is someone who transfers or moves illegally acquired money on behalf of someone else. Some money mules know they are supporting criminal enterprises; others are unaware that they are helping criminals profit. Don't be a mule.

How the scam works:

  • Scammers post online job advertisements soliciting college students for administrative positions.
  • The student employee receives counterfeit checks in the mail or via e-mail and is instructed to deposit the checks into their personal checking account.
