A federal judge says a misleading ICE press release placed a colleague at real risk, exposing fissures between immigration enforcement and judicial ethics.

The Chief United States District Judge for Rhode Island sharply condemned ICE’s actions for a false accusation against a colleague, saying it put her in personal danger and undermined the public’s trust in the federal courts.
In a statement released on Tuesday, it discusses the findings of a special counsel appointed by the judge regarding a potential ethical violation by a Department of Justice attorney: the violation was found to be serious, but no disciplinary proceeding was initiated.
Chief Judge John McConnell stressed that the special counsel “found sufficient evidence to conclude” that Kevin Bolan, a senior attorney in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Rhode Island, failed to uphold the duty of candor and transparency in court when he knowingly withheld information about a long-standing arrest warrant for the migrant. Later, Judge Melissa DuBose ordered the migrant released from custody.
Following that, ICE released a press release with improvised wording, labeling DuBose “a Biden-era activist judge,” who allegedly knowingly allowed the release of “a violent criminal – an undocumented immigrant sought for murder in the Dominican Republic.”
