Fiery exchanges as Parliament hears nature and substance of whistleblower allegations - Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation

The Minister for Inward Investment has described the culture among the previous senior management of the Royal Gibraltar Police as a sustained and deeply troubling pattern of alleged wrongdoing, ranging from the illicit recording of meetings in interview suites to spying on the Chief Minister’s movements and use of unregulated surveillance equipment .

In a Motion before Parliament presenting the allegations made by RGP whistleblowers, Sir Joe Bossano said these allegations could not be swept under the carpet.

However, the Leader of the Opposition said this was nothing more than a smokescreen and a vendetta, as well as an abuse of power.

A parliamentary motion, moved by Sir Joe Bossano called for whistleblower disclosures within the Royal Gibraltar Police to be laid before the House. The whistleblowers’ identities were not disclosed.

The first allegation was by a Detective Inspector involved in Operation Delhi, who said he had witnessed Commissioner Ian McGrail having a meeting in his suite with the complainant in the investigation, being given preferential treatment. He allegedly questioned this and was removed from the investigation.

The second was regarding a retired Commissioner’s private car which was stolen. The allegation was that abnormal and irregular resources were deployed to investigate the theft, including the investigation of a Bulgarian criminal gang in Spain.
