An assisted living facility in Emporia is being sued by a former employee who is claiming violation of labor and wage laws, as well as retaliation for whistleblowing.
Kaylani Bronson is suing Sunflower Care Homes LLC. She filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Kansas, which is located in Topeka.
Bronson has been a certified CNA since 2014 and a certified medication aide since 2016, according to the lawsuit. She was hired by Sunflower to work as a CNA and a certified medication aide in January 2024.

The legal team representing Bronson — Chloe Davis and Bruce Brumley — didn't specify a specific dollar amount in damages in the lawsuit. However, they did ask the court to instruct Sunflower to stop violating the law.

Shortly after starting her job at Sunflower, Bronson said she noticed other CNAs had been administering narcotic medications without properly reporting it to the Medication Administration Record, according to court documents. This is a database that spreads across all types of health care facilities and is meant to keep track of every medication administered to a patient, including the medication name, strength and directions of use.
