BOSTON — Jury selection in the federal corruption and bribery trial of former Fall River chief of staff Gen Andrade began Monday, but potential jurors were sent home early after being delivered a briefing and questionnaire by presiding Judge Douglas Woodlock.
According to a trial schedule, the pool of potential jurors filled out questionnaires on the first day of the proceedings. Attorneys on both sides will review them on Tuesday. On Wednesday, jurors who get called back will sit for voir dire (the interview process used to select a fair and impartial jury) before the jury is seated.
“I’ll try to get this case to you as promptly as possible,” Woodlock told a roomful of potential jurors in a common area at the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in Boston Monday morning.
Andrade, who served as Jasiel Correia II's chief of staff, is facing four counts of extortion conspiracy, aiding and abetting extortion, bribery and lying to government law enforcement.
Two counts of extortion-related charges were dismissed recently by federal prosecutors.
Andrade was arrested in September 2019 along with Correia on federal grand jury indictments for alleged government corruption that includes allegations of a shakedown scheme of marijuana vendors looking to do business in the city during Correia’s tenure as mayor.
