Sunday marks five years since the assassination of Gauteng Health whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
Deokaran served as the acting chief director of financial accounting in 2021 when she exposed suspicious payments at the Tembisa Hospital.
The 53-year-old was then gunned down outside her Johannesburg house in an attack by six hitmen, who are now serving jail time.
Days before she was ambushed on the driveway of her home, Deokaran alerted her seniors that her life was in danger, but she received no protection.
Deokaran had just uncovered more than R800 million in separate payments to at least 200 alleged shell companies.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has since placed the figure at R2 billion.
At a memorial event on Sunday, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Balton noted police are yet to identify other roleplayers in the murder.
“What we haven't seen is identification of the people who paid her killers. Nor have we seen a change of the systems that enable this corruption.”
The SIU has linked the corruption to at least three co-ordinated syndicates, and apparent businessmen Hangwani Maumela and Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, who remain under investigation.
