TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A Florida senator filed legislation Monday that would create new criminal penalties for lottery fraud and theft by retailers.
Senator Corey Simon’s bill targets people who present counterfeit lottery tickets or make false claims for prize money. The legislation prohibits falsifying facts, making false statements or using false documents to claim lottery winnings.
Under the bill, the crime would be a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 5punishable years in prison or a $5,000 fine.
The bill also addresses theft of a lottery ticket by a lottery retailer.
Retailers or employees are prohibited from using their position to steal any lottery ticket from the store or from a customer.
