Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, has signed a bill into law aiming to make apartment complexes safer for tenants. The bill mandates background checks for all employees, institutes key-log requirements for using master keys, and increases the required notification time before entering an apartment for maintenance reasons.
This new legislation, SB 898, better known as Miya’s Law, is named after the 19-year-old Miya Marcano, who was found dead in 2021, a week after she went missing from her apartment. According to investigators, the suspected killer worked as a maintenance worker at the apartment complex she lived in and used a master key fob to enter her unit on the day she went missing. The suspected killer later committed suicide before law enforcement could carry out an arrest warrant.
In a press release concerning the new legislation, Gov. DeSantis states, “Every tenant deserves to be safe in their own home. By signing this legislation, we are making it safer to live in a rental unit and giving renters more peace of mind in their homes. Miya’s death was a tragedy, and our prayers continue to be with the Marcano family. I am proud to act on their behalf to help prevent a tragedy like that from happening to another Florida tenant.”
