HARTFORD—The Michigan State University mass shooting Monday night that killed three students and wounded five others is one of nearly 70 similar mass shootings this year as Connecticut officials work to tighten gun laws.
"In Connecticut because we lived through Sandy Hook, every time we see a mass shooting we are particularly aware it could have been us," state Rep. Steven Stafstrom, D-Bridgeport, co-chair of the legislature's Judiciary Committee said Tuesday.
Stafstrom was on hand as Gov. Ned Lamont announced proposed legislation a few weeks ago that he said tightened loopholes in the state's ban on military-style weapons and proposed other reforms including making possession of an unregistered large capacity magazine a Class D felony with a penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
As an attorney, Stafstrom said that it would have been illegal in Connecticut for the Michigan State shooter to buy or posses a firearm after being on probation for a felony conviction regarding carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
But experts in Michigan said it was premature to determine if the shooter, Anthony Dwayne McRae, 43, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was legally carrying the gun he used in the shooting and if the weapon was a military-style firearm or a pistol.
