TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez responded to President Donald Trump's statement before the United Nations General Assembly by accusing the U.S. leader of telling lies about Cuba, particularly regarding allegations that the country poses a threat to the United States.
"The Government of the United States is incapable of accepting that Cuba is and has the right to be a fully sovereign and independent country. None of the falsehoods of the President of the United States at the UN can deny that fact," said Rodriguez on X, as quoted by ANTARA.
"Cuba does not represent any threat to the United States or to any country," he said. The senior Cuban diplomat stated that, contrary to the U.S. leader's allegations, it is the ongoing economic and energy blockade that threatens Cuba due to its "punitive" nature.
Cuban diplomats walked out of the UN General Assembly hall on Tuesday as President Trump spoke about the immense pressure Washington is exerting on Havana, according to RIA Novosti.
In his speech, Trump said Cuba is facing "the greatest pressure it has ever experienced" and described the country as a "failed state."
Recently, the U.S. has stepped up sanctions pressure on Cuba. In late January, the U.S. imposed tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba and declared a state of emergency, citing a perceived threat from Cuba to U.S. national security.
