A former superintendent of the Route 6/10 Connector reconstruction project was sentenced Tuesday to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $40,000 fine for misleading state transportation and environmental officials about where materials used in the project came from.
Dennis Ferreira pleaded guilty in December to three counts of making false statements.
Federal prosecutors said Ferreira admitted that he falsely reported to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation where dirt and stone for the project came from.
The stone, which was brought in from Massachusetts, did not meet environmental standards. Some of the dirt came from the new Pawtucket/Central Falls train station, but it was not supposed to be moved.
State agencies have agreed not to dig up the stone and soil, which is already buried beneath the highway.
Ferreira is a former employee of Barletta Heavy Division, which is building the Route 6/10 project.
Prosecutors said Barletta separately entered into a non-prosecution agreement to resolve claims. The company paid fines and agreed to compliance measures.
