Former employee sues Limestone for alleged layoff violations following sudden shutdown - GoUpstate

A former employee of the now closed Limestone University filed a class action complaint against the college, stating workers were notified of being laid off on short notice.

According to court documents, Natalie Ruth, a former Limestone employee, filed a suit against the university. The suit said Limestone failed to notify Ruth and more than 50 other employees that they would be laid off.

On April 19, the university informed its employees that they would be laid off on April 30. On May 1, Limestone closed its doors.

The lawsuit alleged the university failed to notify them with 60 days' notice.

According to previous reporting by the Herald-Journal, the university’s board of trustees met for several hours on April 29 and announced that in-person and online courses would be discontinued following the current academic year.

The school announced to students and staff that Limestone faced a $6 million budget shortfall, which could lead to its closure.

On April 22, the board met and put off a final decision about the university’s fate. In the past week, more than $2 million was raised through the “Together for Limestone” campaign.

Ruth worked as the Communications and Marketing assistant for the university for more than a year. T. Ryan Langley of the Spartanburg-based Langley Law Firm represents her.

The lawsuit said the termination violates the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. United States Congress passed the act in 1998.
