Former Houston County DA’s defense requesting new information on whistleblowers - WDHN

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN)— The defense for former Houston County Assistant DA Mark Johnson is asking the state to reveal the identities of the whistleblowers that led to Johnson’s arrest and charges.

According to the court motion filed on October 13, the information requested is important for Johnson receiving a fair trial, equal protection, and reliable sentencing.

The motion also requests any evidence of bias be revealed to the defense.

“For these reasons, the defendant respectfully requests that this Court enter an order requiring the State to reveal the information set out in his motion, including the identity of all informants and the immunity, consideration, and promises given or promised by the State within fourteen days from the date an order is entered,” states the court motion.

Earlier this week, two new attorneys were added to Johnson’s defense team. Stephen T. Etheridge and Jennifer Joyce Tompkins will join Attorney Dustin Fowler.

Johnson turned himself into the Houston County Jail on October 6 and was fired from the Houston County District Attorney’s office later that day. He is currently out on a $180,000 bond.

He is currently facing six ethics violations charges:

  • Count 1 charges Johnson with soliciting “a female companion or escort” from a criminal defendant (Witness One) for the purpose of corruptly influencing official action in her criminal case(s);
