A former journalist in his 60s, accused of publishing a book containing false information about the late Lee Kyung-hee, the father of President Lee Jae-myung, and spreading such claims on a YouTube program, has been referred to prosecutors.
The Andong Police Station in North Gyeongsang Province announced on the 26th that it had sent the suspect, identified as Mr. A, to prosecutors on charges of defamation of the deceased and violations of the Public Official Election Act.
According to police, Mr. A published a book in August of last year claiming that the president’s father, then the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, had embezzled funds from leaf tobacco purchase payments and fled in the middle of the night. He also allegedly made similar statements as a panelist on a YouTube current affairs program in October of the same year.
During the investigation, Mr. A failed to provide evidence to support his claims. The police determined that his actions constituted defamation of the deceased through the dissemination of false information and violations of the Public Official Election Act, leading to the referral to prosecutors.
Earlier, the police launched an investigation in April after the president’s older brother filed a complaint against Mr. A on related charges.
