KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A former Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent secretary filed a whistleblower lawsuit Thursday, claiming the Board of Education violated multiple policies.
Tabatha Coleman claimed the Board has violated the open meetings act, abused public money, and took more than $248,000 in questionable stipends since 2007 without public disclosure, according to the court filing.
“If people in Kalamazoo are wondering why the elaborate KPS explanations for all the people they’ve fired don’t really make any sense, it’s because they haven’t yet heard the story of the lady assigned to be executive secretary to the Superintendent and the board of education,” Coleman’s attorney, Eric Delaporte, said.
The former superintendent’s secretary alleged she was demoted and ostracized after calling out the stipends and other abuses, a news release from Delaporte Law reads.
“She attempted to tell the truth to the Board of Education, and she attempted to tell the truth to interim superintendent," Delaporte said. "All she has done is suffer the consequences of you know speaking truth to power.”
Coleman said she was happy in her work and received excellent performance reviews.
