Former LU dean sues, claims university fired him due to 'whistle-blower activities' - WSET

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — A former dean at Liberty University is now suing the school, according to a lawsuit filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court.

The lawsuit was filed on Nov. 17 by Dr. John Robert Markley. He claims that Liberty fired him because of "whistle-blower activities," and that it is "unlawful termination."

He was fired by the school on June 24 of this year.

Markley was hired by LU in 2008 as an adjunct member. He was a full-time employee as of March 2017 and worked as an Assessment Coordinator in the College of General Studies, Associate Professor of the New Testament, and Associate Dean in the College of General Studies.

Most recently, Markley was the Administrative Dean for Academic Operations. This particular role was as a senior administrator within the Office of the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Scott Hicks.

In his position, Dr. Markley claims he witnessed many acts regarding the management of the LU corporation.

His position according to the suit, "provided an eye-opening perspective on the inner workings of a multi-billion-dollar enterprise that operated to maximize profits without ethics and at the expense of truth and those willing to fight for it, and to the detriment of the students, and professors."

Markley continuously reported claims of "disturbing violations and potential violations of state and federal laws to LU leadership -- including his supervisors -- and law enforcement officials."
