Former Oxford Recovery Center CEO charged with nine counts of health care fraud, AG says - mlive.com

TROY, MI - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has charged the former owner and CEO of the Oxford Recovery Center with nine felony counts of health care fraud for allegedly submitting false claims for services that were not provided, according to a news release.

Tamela Peterson, 59, of Brighton, was arraigned Monday before Magistrate Jerry Sherwood in the 53rd District Court on nine counts of Health Care Fraud – False Claim.

Each count carries a potential penalty of up to four years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.

Peterson previously owned and led the Oxford Recovery Center in Brighton and the The Oxford Center in Troy.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the facilities treated patients for addiction and mental health conditions, including children diagnosed with autism through an Applied Behavioral Analysis program.

Prosecutors allege Peterson knew of and directly benefited from fraudulent billing practices, including charging for services that were never rendered. The state’s investigation began in September 2022 after complaints from former providers and patients.

“Filing false claims impacts not only patients and providers, but also contributes to increased costs of healthcare and medical insurance for everybody,” Nessel said in a statement. “Health care fraud undermines the trust between patients and providers and patients’ notions of confidentiality and care.
