Former President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years, on the 27th in the first trial for allegedly violating the Public Official Election Act by publicizing false information, including claims that he had “never met Jeon Seong-bae, a shaman also known as Geonjin, with former first lady Kim Keon-hee” during his campaign for the 20th presidential election. If this sentence is finalized, the People Power Party will have to return the full 39.7 billion Korean won in election expenses reimbursed by the National Election Commission.
The 21st Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Judge Cho Soon-pyo) recognized Yoon’s guilt for publicizing false information in the first trial verdict on the 27th. Following the ruling, Yoon’s legal team stated, “The court’s judgment contains too many errors,” adding, “We plan to appeal and properly contest the decision.”
Yoon was indicted for publicizing false information twice between December 2021 and January 2022 during his presidential campaign. The first instance occurred at a debate hosted by the Kwanhun Club, where he claimed, “There is no fact that I introduced Lawyer Lee Mo to former Superintendent Yoon Woo-jin.” The second instance was during an interview at the launch of the Buddhist Leaders Forum, where he stated, “Jeon Seong-bae, a shaman also known as Geonjin, has never met former first lady Kim Keon-hee.”
