A Massachusetts state employee has been accused of double dipping by holding down two state jobs at once with overlapping hours.
The State Ethics Commission’s Enforcement Division alleged Monday that Brooke Merkin violated conflict of interest law by having two separate state jobs during the same hours.
The commission will schedule a public hearing on the allegations against Merkin within 90 days.
In a press release, the commission said Merkin began working a primarily full-time remote job for the Center for Health Information and Analysis in January 2001 as desk side support. A month later, the commission alleges Merkin took a part-time job with the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security as a part-time service desk analyst.
Neither state agency was aware Merkin was working at the other agency and the commission alleges she gave false excuses to the Center for Health Information and Analysis when she was unavailable during hours she was working for the other agency.
The commission also alleges Merkin’s timesheets submitted between Feb. 19 and March 1, 2021 showed 31 overlapping hours resulting in her being paid $1,200 in “unearned and undue compensation.”
Merkin attempted to resign both positions in Mach 2021, the commission, said, but the two agencies did not accept her resignation and instead both terminated her.
