Former Union County Schools employee charged with fraud for fake mileage claims - WCNC

Kathryn Lynn Earp, a former Union County school employee, faces charges of obtaining property by false pretenses after allegedly submitting fraudulent mileage claims

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A former Union County Public Schools employee was arrested on fraud charges after investigators said she submitted mileage reimbursement requests for travel she never made.

Kathryn Lynn Earp was charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses following an investigation by Union County Sheriff's Office detectives into fraudulent reimbursement claims, according to deputies.

Detectives learned Earp submitted mileage reimbursement requests for meetings and work-related travel she did not attend while employed by the school system. Court documents show she falsely claimed 148 miles of travel on Aug. 7, 2025, receiving $103.60, and 270 miles of travel on Sept. 2, 2025, receiving $189, for a total of roughly $293 in fraudulent reimbursements at a rate of 70 cents per mile.

Earp was arrested without incident and transported to the Union County Detention Center, where she was issued a $20,000 secured bond. She has since been released and is no longer employed by the school system, officials said.

She is scheduled to appear in court on July 21.
