BOSTON — Prompted by the February release of the results of what was described as the world’s largest pilot project to date, the concept of the four-day work week has grabbed headlines recently.
Researchers, including two professors and a Ph.D. student from Boston College, considered the trial, in which 2,900 workers in the United Kingdom participated, a “resounding success.”
Of the 61 companies that took part, 56 said they planned to continue with the four-day week, and 18 confirmed the policy would be a permanent change. So profound was the impact on employees’ well-being that 15% of them said that no amount of money would induce them to return to a five-day schedule.
While the study may have garnered some attention, attorneys who counsel employers say they have not been hearing from clients seriously considering reshaping their work weeks.
“I can’t say that this is widespread, at least among the clients I work with,” says Boston attorney Alexandra D. Thaler, adding that much more prevalent are ongoing questions about the hybrid, work-from-home model initially wrought by the pandemic.
But that does not mean that lawyers have not started to think about the advice they might give, should those calls come.
As for whether segments of the legal profession itself might ever move to a four-day work week, attorneys express skepticism, noting the barriers — both practical and cultural — that would have to be overcome.=
