PLANO, Texas — A Frisco physician has agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle allegations of submitting false claims to a federal COVID-19 reimbursement program, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs. Samad Khan, M.D., owner of SK Primary Care, PLLC, allegedly billed for services not performed between April 2020 and October 2021.
The settlement resolves accusations that Khan knowingly submitted false claims to the Health Resources & Services Administration's COVID-19 Claims Reimbursement to Health Care Providers and Facilities for Testing, Treatment, and Vaccine Administration for the Uninsured Program. The program reimbursed providers for COVID-19 related services for uninsured individuals from May 2020 to April 2022.
The United States alleges that Khan billed for higher-level evaluation and management services, which require a physician or qualified health professional, instead of the appropriate specimen collection codes. The COVID-19 test sites operated by SK Primary Care were staffed by medical assistants who performed nasal swabs, but patients were not seen by Khan or any other qualified health professional, according to the press release.
