Amid missiles and ceasefire violations, Pakistan has unleashed an equally dangerous offensive: a disinformation campaign on social media aimed at sowing confusion, stoking fear and manipulating sentiment. Following India’s successful precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, a coordinated digital onslaught has been seen on social media platforms.
Spearheaded by pro-Pakistan accounts and amplified by state media outlets and even some verified handles of Pakistani politicians, the campaign appears to be designed to distort facts, shift narratives and mask Islamabad's military provocations. Here are some of the disinformation posts being widely shared on or around May 10:
False claims of Pakistan destroying India's S-400 missile systems
Amongst the most glaring fabrications is the claim that Pakistan's JF-17 fighter jets fired hypersonic missiles to destroy an Indian S-400 air defence system stationed in Adampur, Punjab. The information, initially propagated by Pakistan’s state-run broadcaster PTV and picked up by China’s Xinhua news agency via Global Times, was categorically denied by Indian defence officials.
The Press Information Bureau’s Fact-Check Unit also issued a statement on X, dismissing the viral posts. “Posts circulating on social media claim that Pakistan has destroyed an Indian S-400 air defence system. This claim is FAKE. Reports of destruction or any damage to an S-400 system are baseless,” PIB said in a post.
