A supposed FSB whistleblower claimed that Russia's war with Ukraine is now unwinnable, saying that within the Kremlin the spy agency was being blamed for the failures so far and likening Vladimir Putin to Hitler for wanting to start a world war.
The letter, which has not been authenticated, was published online by a Russian human rights watchdog, Gulagu. It was then picked up by analysts at Bellingcat.
Its damning contents were published as a second top Russian military official was reported to have been killed in Ukraine.
Ukraine's military intelligence said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces killed Major General Vitaly Gerasimov near Kharkiv.
Gerasimov was the first deputy commander of Russia's 41st army, the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine's defense ministry said in a statement.
Gerasimov took part in the second Chechen war, the Russian military operation in Syria, and the annexation of Crimea, winning medals from those campaigns.
Last week, Russian media said another military leader was killed: Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, 47, deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District.
Sukhovetsky died during a special operation in Ukraine, his comrade-in-arms Sergey Chipilev wrote on social media, according to Pravda.ru.
Ukraine says its forces have killed more than 11,000 Russian troops.
Russia has confirmed about 500 losses.
Neither side has disclosed Ukrainian casualties.
