The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently focused its enforcement efforts on protecting Americans from scammers looking to take advantage of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic by making false claims about cures and treatments. Letters sent by the FTC this week warn that violators who make deceptive claims related to the treatment, cure, or prevention of COVID-19 are subject to penalties of up to $43,792 per violation. The FTC sent letters to companies making products the FTC has warned about in the past, including peptide therapy, herbal remedies, Ivermectin, and supplements.
Other letters were sent to makers of less-common products that are making claims related to prevention or treatment of COVID-19. For example, letters went to companies claiming that “imprinted filtered water,” nasal irrigation, and even seaweed extract can fight coronavirus. Before making any statements related to COVID-19 on products it is important to ensure the claims are not deceptive or misleading and are supported by appropriate evidence.
The Federal Trade Commission ordered more than 20 marketers nationwide to immediately stop making baseless claims that their products and supposed therapies can treat or prevent COVID-19.
