The use and potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is growing at an ever-increasing rate. Recently, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have been making headlines as the use of the software grows in popularity. According to recent research by Goldman Sachs, automation will impact an estimated 300 million jobs across leading global economies, with a quarter of the work done in the US and Europe affected. Approximately two-thirds of jobs in these locations are already implementing some form of AI automation.
The UK government (the Government) aims to establish the UK as an "AI superpower" and has already invested heavily in the field – since 2014, it has spent more than 2.5 billion in the area. It has also recently announced investments of 110 million into the AI Tech Missions Fund, 900 million into a new AI Research Resource (which will develop a supercomputer to run AI models), as well as allocating 8 million of funding to a new AI Global Talent Network. It is likely hoped that this financial support will realise further benefits for the country, with the Government reporting that the AI industry contributed approximately 3.7 billion to the UK economy, and provided 50,000 jobs, in 2022.
