GACL introduces whistleblower hotline to tackle airport extortion - asaaseradio.com

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced a series of measures aimed at eliminating extortion at airports across the country, including the introduction of mystery shoppers, a dedicated reporting hotline and stricter disciplinary action against offenders.

The measures were agreed at a high-level stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, to address the persistent problem of extortion, commonly described as “begging”, at GACL-operated airports.

In a press release, GACL said stakeholders committed to intensifying efforts to identify and sanction individuals found engaging in extortion.

“As agreed by the stakeholders, among other measures, a mystery shopping initiative, whereby individuals found culpable of extortionary conduct will be publicly identified through appropriate media channels, is being introduced,” the statement said.

The company added that the initiative is intended to discourage the practice and strengthen accountability among all personnel operating at the airports.

Under the new measures, any airport staff found engaging in extortion will face disciplinary sanctions and may no longer be permitted to work in airport environments.

To encourage public reporting, GACL has established a dedicated hotline, 0542175636, accessible via calls, WhatsApp or SMS, through which passengers can report incidents of extortion involving airport personnel or service providers.
