Illinois State University’s Office of the Provost welcomes Michael Garrity as its new director of Academic Labor and Employee Relations (LER), effective April 1, 2026. He will provide strategic and operational leadership and will report to Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs Russ Morgan.
“I am excited to have Michael join the Office of the Provost team at Illinois State,” said Dr. Morgan. “He brings unique perspective to this role, having been an active public sector employer representative in both higher education and governmental settings throughout his career.”
The Academic LER will be responsible for planning, negotiating, and administering labor contracts for Illinois State’s four academic bargaining units and for consulting with supervisory staff regarding tenured and tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track faculty, faculty associate, and graduate assistant employee relations matters.
“I am honored to bring my many years of experience in the public service sector to Illinois State,” said Garrity. “I look forward to contributing to the University’s mission to prepare diverse, engaged, and informed members of society through collaborative teaching, scholarship, and service.”
