Gary activists claim proposed Fulcrum BioEnergy plant unproven, bad for environment - Chicago Tribune

Members of Gary Advocates for Responsible Development say a new report by the agency shows the planned Fulcrum Centerpoint bioenergy facility is “bad for the city” despite the company’s claims to the contrary.

GARD member Dorreen Carey described the report as a “game changer” Wednesday at a press conference announcing its release.

The group has spent the past year raising public awareness about its objections to the project based on the company’s unproven track record and the negative impact plant operations will have on residents’ health, natural resources, and the city’s future as a sustainable community on the shore of Lake Michigan.

“Fulcrum company PR continues to promote false claims that their process is green and that their newly constructed plan in the Nevada desert is fully operational and capable of making jet fuel from processed trash,” Carey said.

“The GARD report that you will receive today provides facts, not PR, from publicly availably literature that conclude that plants like Fulcrum have along record of poor performance, are bad for the environment, and create toxic chemical hazards,” Carey said.

The group is in the process of appealing the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s approval of Fulcrum’s air quality permit for the site.
