'Gaslit' Cast Photos vs. the Real-Life People: Which Characters Are Based on Real People? - Town & Country

The upcoming Starz drama Gaslit chronicles the story of Watergate, but from the perspective of several lesser-known players in the oft-retold saga. Based on the first season of Slate's Slow Burn podcast, the series is billed as "a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal—from Nixon’s bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.”

Sean Penn and Julia Roberts star as Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell, and his wife Martha Mitchell, leading an ensemble cast that also includes Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, and Shea Whigham.

The show is executive produced by Sam Esmail, who's best known for creating Mr. Robot, and was also a producer on Amazon's Homecoming (another podcast adaptation). And the creator is Robbie Pickering, who worked with Esmail on Mr. Robot. Fans of the style of the series should note that the show is planned to be an ongoing anthology series, with future seasons focusing on other true stories of corruption and whistleblowing.

Gaslit premieres on Starz at midnight on April 24. Sign up for Starz
