GB News makes ‘substantial’ payment to Islamic Relief over false claims - Third Sector

GB News has paid 30,000 to Islamic Relief Worldwide after accepting it had broadcast false allegations against charity.

In February, The Camilla Tominey Show included a live interview with the political analyst Amjad Taha, who incorrectly claimed that Islamic Relief had been banned in countries overseas because an investigation showed it had sent money to some terrorist groups in the Middle East.

This went unchallenged on the show at the time and subsequently formed the basis of a news story for the website MailOnline.

GB News apologised in a statement in September, saying: “We accept the allegation that Islamic Relief has funded terrorist groups is untrue.

“Islamic Relief has stated it does not promote or support extremism of any kind and that it is a purely humanitarian organisation.

“We apologise to Islamic Relief and are happy to correct the record.”

MailOnline also apologised to the charity in April for repeating the false claims.

At the High Court yesterday, lawyers representing Islamic Relief read out a statement saying that the charity had complained that the broadcast would have been understood to mean that “not only has Islamic Relief funded terrorist groups in the Middle East, and as such deserves to be banned in the UK, but it is also part of a greater agenda promoting extremism and radicalisation”.
