Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) launched a fiery rebuke Thursday of new claims he worked as a drag queen in Brazil and stole from a dying dog's GoFundMe, the latest allegations in a trail of lies and deceit by the freshman congressman, who has rebuked some fellow GOP lawmakers' calls for him to resign.
In a series of tweets, Santos called claims he once competed as a drag queen in Brazil “categorically false” on Thursday, hours after Reuters reported that two former acquaintances said he competed in the beauty pageants 15 years ago.
The report raised contradictions to the embattled freshman congressman’s support for socially conservative policies like Florida’s “don’t say gay bill,” despite being the first openly gay Republican non-incumbent elected to the House.
Santos also denied allegations aired Wednesday that he stole $3,000 from a GoFundMe page to pay for life-saving surgery for a veteran’s dying dog, calling the report “shocking and insane.”
Reiterating his defiance amid calls from other New York Republicans for him to resign, Santos said “these distractions won’t stop me!”
A coalition of prominent GOP members and Santos’ colleagues in the House called for him to resign earlier this month amid what have become near-daily revelations about how he has fabricated nearly his entire resume, personal background and finances.
