Georgia Primary Tests Potency of Trump's False Stolen-Election Claims - Bloomberg

The latest test of former President Donald Trump’s sway over Republican voters will be on display Tuesday night in Georgia’s crucial primary race. So far, it’s not looking good.

David Perdue, the former US senator tapped by Trump to oust incumbent Governor Brian Kemp, trailed by more than 20 percentage points in polls. In the week before the elections, Perdue had a modest schedule of campaign events, while Kemp rushed around the state flanked by a who’s-who of Republicans unpopular with Trump, including former Vice President Mike Pence.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who has evolved from backing Trump to attacking him, was in Georgia this month. He said he expects Kemp to win because of his performance as governor -- and because the GOP is moving on from Trump’s obsession with false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

“Brian Kemp I believe is going to smoke David Perdue against all predictions from a year ago, and that is going to be the biggest loss he can have in this primary season,” Christie said of Trump on ABC’s “This Week” on May 15.
