ONE23WEST campaign sees wannabe influencers engaging in a new form of self care to help stop fraudsters
We all know someone who thinks they’re gaming the financial system. The social media friend offering a shady deal with guaranteed returns. The smug colleague with their 'can’t miss' investment opportunity. It’s frustrating, but what can ordinary people do? Most of us feel powerless when it comes to stopping fraudsters.
But thanks to the BC Securities Commission’s (BCSC) Whistleblower Programme campaign from ONE23WEST, this is no longer the case. The program’s reporting tool gives British Columbians a way to report fraudsters for a chance to be rewarded with up to $500,000 for tips that meaningfully contribute to an investigation of investment fraud and other types of investment market misconduct.
“Whistleblowers are a powerful way to protect the public and expose market misconduct,” says Pamela McDonald, the BCSC’s director of communications and education. “When you see someone trying to rip people off, don’t stay silent – speak up. Come forward and let karma do its work of holding wrongdoers accountable.”
“There’s a real sense of catharsis knowing justice is being served,” adds Tony Hird, creative director at the BCSC’s partner agency, ONE23WEST. “We wanted to tap into those feelings of righteous anger for the campaign. There’s a peace of mind that comes from knowing you got payback for a good cause.”
