Get the facts: A timeline of what happened during the Capitol riots on Jan. 6 - WMTW Portland

On Jan. 6, 2021, a mob of angry Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden's presidential win.

Here's a timeline of what happened on Jan. 6.

12 p.m.

Trump took the stage at a "Save America" rally near the Capitol to spout false election fraud claims.

About 10,000 his supporters gathered as Trump stated, "They rigged the election, they rigged it like they've never rigged an election before." After a nearly hour long speech, Trump tells the crowd, "and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."

1 p.m.

Inside the Capitol building, the House and Senate gathered for a joint session to count the votes and certify Biden's presidential win. By that point, rioters have already gathered outside.

1:30 p.m.

In their first challenge, Republican lawmakers objected to Arizona's Electoral College votes cast in favor of Biden. The riots outside the building escalated.

2 p.m.

Rioters broke into the Senate side of the Capitol. Mike Pence and lawmakers were evacuated to safety.

Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger made the first call for assistance.

2:20 p.m.

Rioters broke into the House side of the Capitol where some lawmakers remained trapped. Security guards stood at entrances with guns drawn.
