Gillette woman sentenced for false claims, wire fraud - County 17

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Gillette woman will serve 33 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for wire fraud, using an unauthorized access device and making false claims to the IRS.

Alexa Kinney was sentenced Thursday, May 19, by U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson. Also part of her sentence is paying $172,400 in restitution, according to IRS – Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Andy Tsui in a news release Monday.

In less than a one-year time frame, Kinney created three schemes to defraud others for her own benefit, according to court documents. The schemes included obtaining funds from an investor using fraudulent investment opportunities, using another individual’s credit card without their authorization and submitting a false statement to the IRS to claim an Economic Impact Payment Kinney was not entitled to, according to the release.

Tsui said Kinney knowingly attempted to obtain $165,000 from an investor under false pretenses by stating the investment would mature to $280,000 in approximately two months. Kinney never invested the money as claimed, and instead used the money for personal expenses and to pay off creditors, court documents state.

In another instance, she got a credit card for payment for legal services she was to provide and used the victim’s account for personal expenses.
