GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) — The U.S. Department of Labor recovered more than $100,000 from a Goose Creek restaurant after investigators found management shortchanged 21 workers and violated child labor laws, according to officials.
Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant failed to pay workers their legal earnings and violated minimum wage, overtime and recordkeeping laws of the Fair Labor Standards Act, officials say.
The restaurant also had two 15-year-old staff members work more than 18 hours during multiple school weeks. Federal youth employment requirements state that managers must set a limit to times of day and number of hours for underaged workers.
The department recovered $108,924 in back wages and liquidated damages for the 21 affected workers.
“As food service industry employers struggle to find people to fill the jobs needed to remain competitive, they must take into account that retaining and recruiting workers is more difficult when employers fail to respect workers’ rights and pay them their full wages,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Jamie Benefiel in Columbia, South Carolina.
