Government Accountability Project Condemns President Trump’s Unlawful Removal of Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger

WASHINGTON—Government Accountability Project strongly condemns the Trump administration’s attempted dismissal of Hampton Dellinger, who has successfully led the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) since 2021. This action not only violates federal law but also poses a direct threat to whistleblowers across the country.

OSC is an independent and nonpartisan federal investigative agency tasked with safeguarding federal employees from retaliation—especially when reprisals are directed at whistleblowers. Under the law, the Special Counsel can only be removed by the President for “inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office.”

Dellinger’s termination lacks any legitimate justification and only serves to undermine OSC’s crucial good governance functions. This move jeopardizes ongoing investigations and sends a chilling message to federal employees who rely on OSC to protect their rights when exposing wrongdoing.

“Whistleblower rights hinge on an apolitical special counsel to enforce them, who by law can only be fired for a clear cause.
