The Government has announced plans for a whistleblower scheme encouraging people to speak out against tax avoiders and fraud.Informants would receive up to 25% of the extra tax raised in return for coming forward.
The scheme takes influence from across the pond where whistleblowers in the US have received vast sums of cash in the reward scheme across the Atlantic. n the 2022-23 fiscal year, the Internal Revenue Service in the US paid $89 million (68 million) to 121 whistleblowers, amounting to $735,537 (568,000) each.An extra $338 million (261 million) in tax collection, thanks to whistleblowers.
Exchequer Secretary James Murray is expected to announce the move in a speech marking the 20th anniversary of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise merging to form HMRC.
Speaking to news outlers, he said: “Everyone in Britain should play by the rules. We have zero tolerance for anyone who commits tax fraud or dodges their responsibilities.”
The minister explained that is why the Government is pushing ahead with its new US-style “whistleblower” reward scheme and its crackdown on anyone abusing company insolvency rules.
He explained that the pursuit of those who break the rules the Government is making the system fairer for everyone else and delivering on the PM’s ‘Plan for Change’ by creating a “simple and modern tax system” that promotes economic growth.
