Government considers merits of dedicated whistleblower authority ... - The Mandarin

Public sector whistleblower reforms have moved to the next phase following government amendments to the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2013 (PID) earlier this year.

A consultation paper has been released by the Attorney-General’s Department to continue the government’s work on the public sector whistleblowing framework.

In a statement, A-G Mark Dreyfus said members of the public had just over a month (22 December, 2023) to make submissions on how to improve Australia’s whistleblower protection scheme.

“We are consulting on whether there is a need to establish a Whistleblower Protection Authority or commissioner, the remaining recommendations from the Moss Review, as well as recommendations from other relevant reports and reviews,” Dreyfus said.

“The government will closely examine the responses to these consultations to determine what reforms are required to ensure Australia has an effective and accessible framework.”

The first set of whistleblower reforms came into immediate effect in June, just one month before Labor’s new National Anti-Corruption Commission (NAAC) — a federal election promise — commenced.

The first whistleblower scheme amendments responded to 21 of the 33 recommendations from the Moss Review, an independent statutory review of the PID Act led by former Integrity Commissioner and head of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity Philip Moss AM in 2016.
