The South African government is warning the public about trusting or sharing unverified content relating to migration.
Government spokesperson, William Baloyi says the increasing spread of misleading information on social media platforms and unofficial websites is creating confusion, fear, and division within communities.
There's been growing public concern over illegal immigration, which has led to foreign nationals being processed for deportation and voluntary repatriation.
Baloyi says they are managing migration through laws, policies and institutions while balancing national interests, human rights, and safety.
“False claims relating to migrants, border management, deportation, documentation processes, access to public service or law enforcement operations have the potential to inflame tensions, undermine confidence in public institutions, and create unnecessary panic," said Baloyi.
"Government calls on all citizens and migrants living in South Africa to act responsibly when consuming and sharing information relating to migration.
