TECUMSEH, Neb. — Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster has filed a lawsuit against State Senator Julie Slama.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in Johnson County District Court. The complaint says it was filed there because Slama lives in Sterling, which is in Johnson County.
According to the lawsuit, Herbster claims he is a victim of a “politically motivated and groundless attack” by Slama who he says “resorted to false and malicious lies about plaintiff, accusing him of scandalous conduct.”
Herbster says in the lawsuit that Slama “lacks even a shred of credibility” and denies ever engaging in the type of behavior he is accused of doing.
According to the lawsuit, Slama and hundreds of other people attended the Douglas County Republican Party’s annual Elephant Remembers dinner where Herbster was seated in the front row due to being a top sponsor.
A report by the Nebraska Examiner earlier this month that reported eight women have confirmed that they were inappropriately touched by Herbster at the dinner, including Slama.
“(Herbster) did not grope anyone, reach under anyone’s skirt or otherwise touch anyone at the dinner, including Slama,” the lawsuit says.
Herbster says in the three years since the alleged incident, no one has come forward to accuse him of misconduct. He adds the false claims come less than a month before the Republican primary, where he was leading in the polls prior to the publication of the Nebraska Examiner story.
