Guest opinion | Rick Cole: On This Labor Day, Let's Support Those ... - Pasadena Now

Labor Day is part of the fabric of American life. We celebrate with backyard barbeques, “end of summer” getaways, and retail sales events. Neglected in the holiday atmosphere is the memory of the brutal battles and sacrifices made by American workers to win rights that we all benefit from. Those struggles continue today in Pasadena.

While reasonable people may disagree on what constitutes a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, it would be hard to find an American today who doesn’t support that principle. Labor Day honors the mass movement to win that fundamental human right – along with the legal rights to form unions, to bargain collectively, and protect the health, safety and dignity of vital workers. Out of that epic fight came the ban on child labor, the 40-hour week, unemployment insurance, the minimum wage, occupational safety protections, paid holidays, and a myriad of other basic worker standards all of us take for granted today.

Now, in what’s been called the “Hot Labor Summer,” writers and actors living in Pasadena are striking to regain a fair share of the massive flow of revenue away from conventional movies and television shows to digital content and streaming services. Local hotel workers are striking for fair wages as travel and tourism rebound in Southern California. UPS delivery drivers just won a new national contract that ended a two-tier pay system and limited forced overtime. Across Southern California, lifeguards, sanitation workers and nurses have...
