Health NZ's Holidays Act remediation payments reach 90% completion for current staff

Health New Zealand paid more than $100 million to thousands of current employees in Canterbury and the West Coast, achieving 90% progress in its Holidays Act remediation payments.

Pete Watson, Regional Executive Director – Te Waipounamu South Island, said on Thursday that Health NZ paid $96.5 million to 12,105 current employees in Canterbury.

The agency also paid approximately $7 million to 933 current employees in the West Coast.

The payments are part of Health NZ's remediation programme, after compliance issues with the Holidays Act left around 90,000 current and 130,000 former employees incorrectly paid.

'Significant step' in remediation

Payments to current employees in Canterbury and the West Coast take the total amount paid so far to $647.7 million across 85,334 employees.

"This marks another significant step in our progress in the remediation project, with more than 90% of our current Health New Zealand employees now having received full or partial remediation," Watson said in a statement.

"I want to thank our staff for their patience as they have been waiting for their payment and also recognise the huge work from our payroll teams, both nationally and in the regions, who have worked tirelessly on this programme."

"MidCentral, Lakes, and Whanganui payrolls are due to be rectified in March–May 2026, as part of transitioning to a different system," Watson said.
