If you skipped watching President Donald Trump’s address to Congress this week, you missed a lot, but you also didn’t miss anything at all.
As is often the case with Trump’s public statements, the president’s joint address — technically not a “State of the Union” speech — was riddled with lies, misinformation and misleading statements, personal attacks on his enemies, and of course, virulent racism and xenophobia. A significant amount of Trump’s energy was also spent on LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender people, who Trump singled out for mockery, derision, and the scaremongering propaganda that defined his presidential campaign.
