More than 225 hospitals and clinics are under the microscope to determine whether they used fraudulent insurance claims for so-called sex-rejecting procedures, including puberty blocking drugs and surgeries. The Health and Human Services report, published Thursday, details the use of Medicaid billing codes for Endocrine Disorder and precocious puberty that doctors used to cover transgender procedures for children, including in states that banned such procedures. The authors analyzed 10 years of nationwide public and private health insurance claims and found nearly $50 million in claims for “Endocrine Disorder, Unspecified.” A video documentary accompanying the report includes testimony from former patients and their families who describe the pressure they experienced to pursue medical interventions for their gender confusion.
Who wrote the report? HHS commissioned the report, titled Wolves in White Coats. Half of the 10 authors are members of the Independent Women’s Forum. Two work for the Catholic think tank Ethics and Public Policy Center. Medical doctors include Dr. Eithan Haim, a trauma surgeon who blew the whistle on Texas Children’s Hospital’s undercover transgender program, and pediatric endocrinologist Quentin Van Meter.
