PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- A week after employees at the Holy Donut on Park Avenue in Portland told the company they were looking to unionize, the company now says those workers made false accusations against them.
The company posted on social media Thursday night, saying while they are willing to petition the National Labor Relations Board for a vote on the union effort, they themselves don’t see how this union would "advance the interests of our teammates and our company."
Last week, the employees, who are looking to unionize, said there are a number of reasons, including low wages, unsafe and unhealthy conditions, lack of benefits, fear of retaliation, inadequate staffing, unpredictable scheduling and other issues, which they say have been ignored or met with hostility.
They wrote on Instagram:
"We have experienced increased scrutiny, increased workload, policy changes to prevent us from taking collective action, attempts to divide workers, and illegal and unfair labor practices."
On Thursday, the company said they were "blindsided" by the employees’ request and since then have been trying to gather information but said this would "fundamentally change how we work together."
The company wrote:
"While we respect the views of the minority working to organize a union at the store and their right to express these views, we strongly disagree with the allegations they have made and the adversarial and confrontational nature of their approach to date."
