Chinese authorities allegedly are preparing to release a man who publicized photos and videos of overcrowded hospitals and dead bodies during the COVID-19 outbreak three years after his disappearance, sources told the Associated Press.
In early 2020, Fang Bin and other citizen journalists embarrassed the Chinese government by posting details of the pandemic on the internet and social media. Chinese officials faced backlash for failing to control the outbreak, according to AP.
In Bin’s last post three years ago on Twitter was a video of a paper reading, “All citizens resist, hand power back to the people.”
The report says Bin was scheduled to be released Sunday from his prison stint stemming from charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” according to two people who did not want to be identified for fear of government retribution.
The Associated Press could not independently confirm his release and could not confirm the details with the authorities.
