WASHINGTON, D.C. (WOLF) — A special closed executive session got underway yesterday on Capitol Hill regarding multiple whistleblower reports alleging misconduct at the Internal Revenue Service.

The House Ways and Means Chair says the committee will review multiple misconduct reports. That includes accusations that politically connected, wealthy taxpayers are getting better IRS treatment, which the Department of Justice intervened during an IRS investigation, and claims of whistleblower retaliation. According to the chair, the committee will follow the facts they find in their investigation.

"This meeting is about transparency and bringing to light facts about alleged government misconduct with three key areas of focus. First, the whistleblower testimony shows that the federal government is not treating all taxpayers the same. The American people deserve to know whether politically connected wealthy individuals are allowed to operate above the law," said Missouri Representative Jason Smith (R).

Smith says committee members will review the claims during the executive session, and when appropriate, release details of the proceedings to the public.
