Party members convene for internal vote after Jim Jordan abandons speakership bid, leaving House at standstill
House Republicans will hold an internal vote on Tuesday to determine which – if any – of their eight declared speaker candidates can win enough support to capture the gavel.
Ahead of the Tuesday vote, eight House Republicans have launched speakership bids: Jack Bergman of Michigan, Byron Donalds of Florida, Tom Emmer of Minnesota, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, Gary Palmer of Alabama, Austin Scott of Georgia and Pete Sessions of Texas.
One of the declared candidates, Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, announced Monday evening that he would drop out of the race to instead focus on his “commitment to President Trump to help lead his campaign in Pennsylvania”.
“I believe the House will elect a new speaker, and I know we will be in good hands with one of our colleagues running,” Meuser said in a statement.
The conference meeting, scheduled to start at 9am on Tuesday, comes four days after Jim Jordan of Ohio abandoned his speakership bid due to entrenched opposition among more moderate Republicans.
The House has now been without a speaker for three weeks, since the historic removal of the Republican Kevin McCarthy of California earlier this month. Because of Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House, any speaker candidate can only afford four defections within the party and still secure the 217 votes needed to win the gavel.
